Please remember in your prayers Monsignor John Sankovitz, a longtime member of the University of St. Thomas theology faculty. He died at age 87 on Sunday, Aug. 29, at the Cerenity Marian Care Center of St. Paul.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, in the Chapel of St. Thomas Aquinas on the university’s St. Paul campus. Visitation will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, at the Cerenity Marian Care Center, 200 Earl St., and one hour prior to the Mass at St. Thomas.

Sankovitz graduated from the Nazareth Hall Preparatory Seminary and St. Paul Seminary; he was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis in 1947.

After serving three years at the Cathedral of St. Paul, Sankovitz taught from 1952 to 1965 at Nazareth Hall, where he also served as rector from 1961 to 1965. He went on to teach at the St. Paul Seminary from 1965 to 1975.

He served as pastor of the Church of St. Dominic in Northfield from 1975 to 1979, and was a member of the St. Thomas theology faculty from 1980 until his retirement in 1997.

In addition to studying at Nazareth Hall, which closed in 1968, and the St. Paul Seminary, Sankovitz received a master’s in classics from the University of Minnesota and studied at the North American Academy in Rome, the University of Notre Dame, St. John’s University in Collegeville, and Catholic University in Washington, D.C.
