Dr. Mel Gray, Economics Department, was featured speaker at a town-gown panel presentation hosted by Indiana University-East in Richmond, Ind. Gray spoke on "Economics of the Nonprofit Arts: An Overview and Local Applications." Respondents on the panel included the mayor, a county council member, the director of economic development and the director of tourism.
Nicole Gurgel, a UST senior majoring in English and women's studies, has developed and is directing a new play, "Somewhere Else Mother," to be performed by members of Central Touring Theater at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, and Friday, May 13, in the fourth-floor theater of The Renaissance Box, 509 Sibley St., St. Paul. Admission is free, but donations will be taken to benefit The Family Place day shelter. Gurgel spent two summers working with homeless youth, and this project is a documentary drama-like telling of the stories of six homeless women. Barbara Hill, a doctoral student in the Organization Development Program at St. Thomas, and Dr. Mitchell Kusy, Organization, Organization Learning and Development Department, have had their article, "Pre-Wiring Strategic Planning: Preparing Leaders One Phase at a Time," accepted for publication in the fall issue of the journal Organization Development Practitioner.
Dr. Robert Werner, Geography Department, and two students – geography student Krista Sandford and history student Anya Yaroch – presented their work, "The Burma Project," at the Undergraduate Midwest Geography Symposium at Macalester College. The students received the "Scholarly Engagement and Societal Reform Award" from the UST School of Law last week for their work on this project.
Dr. Fred Zimmerman, School of Engineering, was a keynote speaker at "Success Through Innovation," the fifth-annual economic development conference hosted by the Initiative Foundation on May 3 in Little Falls.
