Dr. Bernard Brady, College of Arts and Sciences (Theology Department ), is the author of a book, Essential Catholic Social Thought, published by Orbis Books (Maryknoll, N.Y., 2008).
Father James P. Burns, Ph.D., College of Applied Professional Studies (Graduate School of Professional Psychology), presented a professional workshop, "Helping Clergy Achieve Healthy Psychological Integration," to psychologists, neuroscientists, social workers, pastoral counselors, pastors, chaplains and sociologists at the sixth annual Mid-Year Conference on Religion and Spirituality of Div. 36 (Psychology of Religion) of the American Psychological Association Feb. 28 at Loyola College in Maryland. Burns also recently was awarded a double diplomate in behavioral medicine and counseling psychology by the Academy of Behavioral Medicine, Counseling and Psychotherapy.
Dr. Corrine Carvalho, College of Arts and Sciences (Theology Department), is the author of Touching the Altar: The Old Testament for Christian Worship, edited by Carol Bechtel (W.B. Eerdman’s Publishing Co., 2008). Carvalho wrote the chapter "Finding a Treasure Map: Sacred Space in the Old Testament."
Karalyn Downing, a senior majoring in history, presented her paper, "The Neglected Soldier: The United States Colored Troops and American Society," March 6 at the 51st Missouri Valley History Conference in Omaha. The paper was created under the 2007 Young Scholars Grant. Downing also won the Prize for Best Undergraduate Paper.
Dr. Mark Neuzil, College of Arts and Sciences (Communication and Journalism Department), was a symposium speaker March 12 at a conference on wildfire sponsored by the National Interagency Fire Center and the U.S. Forest Service in Boise, Idaho. Neuzil spoke on how media cover wildfires.
Dr. David Penchansky, College of Arts and Sciences (Theology Department), is the author of an article, "No Other Gods: The Bible as a Polytheistic Book," published in the March/April The Fourth R, Vol. 21, No. 2.
James Rogers, Center for Irish Studies, is the author of a review of The Irish-American in Popular Culture, 1945-2000 by Stephanie Rains (Irish Academic Press, 2007). It appeared in the spring 2008 Irish Literary Supplement (Vol. 27, No. 2), a publication of the Irish Studies Program of Boston College.
Rogers kept busy during the "Green Week" before St. Patrick’s Day; he spoke on Irish-American history to senior citizens’ groups from St Paul Community Education, from the Columbia Heights Parks and Recreation program, and for a group of west suburban senior centers organized by Medicine Lake Tours. On March 15 Rogers spoke at the Landmark Center during the Irish Music and Dance Association St. Patrick’s Day celebration. His talk was titled "The Unquiet Quiet Man" and concerned the classic 1952 John Ford film.
Dr. Deborah Savage, College of Arts and Sciences (Theology Department) and St. Paul School of Divinity, is the author of a book, Subjective Dimension of Human Work: The Conversion of the Acting Person According to Karol Wojtyla/John Paul II and Bernard Lonergan (Peter Lang Publishing 2008).
Dr. Barbara Shank, School of Social Work , was awarded the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors (BPD ) President’s Medal of Honor at the 25th Annual BPD Conference and Anniversary Celebration March 9 for her 25 years of distinguished service and commitment to baccalaureate social work education.
Richard Welch Jr., School of Engineering, presented his four-hour tutorial, "How to Improve Electric Motor Power Efficiency - Theory and Practice," Feb. 13 at a pre-conference workshop sponsored by SMMA, The Motor and Motion Association, in Atlanta. The conference that followed, Motor and Drive Systems 2008, was hosted by E-Drive, The Magazine of Electric Motor and Drive Technology.
