Dr. Sarah Armstrong, Personal Counseling, and Dr. Tim Beyer, Life Work Center, presented a workshop, “Developing Professional Presentations: A Discussion with the Education and Training Committee,”at the 72nd annual Minnesota Psychological Convention April 26 in Bloomington. Armstrong received formal recognition and an award for 12 years of service to the MPA Education and Training Committee. She also hosted the convention's poster session, where Personal Counseling and Testing predoctoral interns presented posters of their dissertation research. Interns and their presentations were: Joni Downs, Marquette University, “ Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual School Counselors: What Affects Their Decision-Making Regarding Coming Out at Work?”; Kathy Scholljegerdes, University of St. Thomas, “Anxiety and the College Environment ”; and Tom Tiegs, University of Florida, “What Makes You Feel Loved?: Desired Loving Behaviors in a Lifespan Sample.”
Dr. Scott Wright, College of Arts and Sciences (History Department), is the author of an essay on James Melville published in the revised edition of Critical Survey of Mystery and Detective Fiction (Pasadena, Calif.: Salem Press, 2008). He also wrote a book review of Justin Nordstrom's Danger on the Doorstep: Anti-Catholicism and American Print Culture in the Progressive Era in the spring issue of American Catholic Studies.
Chemistry Department research students Joshua Speros, Katie McGarry, Matthew Humbert, Patrick Hawk, Kyle Marchuk and Brianna MacQueen gave oral and poster presentations at the 20th annual Winchell Undergraduate Research Symposium sponsored by the Minnesota Academy of Science April 25 and 26 at Bethel University. Oral presentations were given by Speros and McGarry, students of Dr. J. Thomas Ippoliti; Humbert, a student of Dr. Tony Borgerding; and Hawk, a student of Dr. Thomas Marsh. Posters were presented by Marchuk, a student of Dr. Gary Mabbott, and MacQueen, a student of Dr. William Ojala. Speros’ presentation, “Synthesis and Characterization of a Novel Polymerizable Chemiluminescent Compound,” won first place in the Chemistry Division.
Dr. Paul Lorah, Dr. Bob Werner and Catherine Hansen, College of Arts and Sciences (Geography Department), took junior and senior geography students to present their original research at the 2008 Midwest Undergraduate Geography Symposium April 26 at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. Senior Stacie Rominski presented “UST Student Housing Location,” and junior Allison Seiwert spoke on “Senior Citizens and Three Rivers Park Trails.” Other students presented posters: Jim Moen: “Mapping for Political Action: Hezbollah Rocket Launches and Israeli Cluster Munition Strikes”; Nathalia Roberts: “Population Distribution and the Creative Class in the Rural West”; Stacie Rominski and Allison Seiwert: “Ideal Locations for Environmentally Friendly Recreational Expansion in Itasca County, MN”; Abigail Krause and Scott O'Donnell: “The Most Valuable Habitat for White-Tailed Deer During the Winter Months in Itasca County, MN.”
