Dr. Sanjeev Bordoloi, Opus College of Business (Decision Sciences Department), chaired a sponsored session, "Service Scheduling and Operational Efficiency,” and presented a paper, "Staffing Decisions in Healthcare Operational Efficiency," at the national conference of the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences Oct. 11-14 in San Diego.
Dr. David Kelley and Catherine Hansen, College of Arts and Sciences (Geography Department), took a group of junior and senior geography students to the 2009 GIS/LIS Consortium annual conference Oct. 22-23 in Duluth. Junior Renee Huset received a consortium undergraduate scholarship award during the awards luncheon. She also participated in a second scholarship competition for undergraduates and presented a talk on her original research, “Using GIS to Understand Minnesota's Carbon Landscape.” Two senior geography students presented their research: Zach Thielke, "Mapping the Community Farmers' Market Community,” and Nathalia Roberts, "Mapping Points of Interest in the Three Rivers Park District.” Kelley served as judge for the undergraduate and graduate student competitions.
Dr. Lalith Samarakoon, Opus College of Business (Finance Department), is co-author of an article, “Stock Market Liberalization and Return Volatility: Evidence From the Emerging Market of Sri Lanka,” with Dr. Fazeel Jaleel of Macquarie University in Australia. The article has been accepted for publication in a forthcoming issue of the Journal of Multinational Financial Management.
Dr. AnnMarie Thomas, School of Engineering, gave an invited lecture on “Design Thinking” at the Minnesota Independent School Forum’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Teacher Seminar at the Science Museum of Minnesota.
Dr. Daniel Tight, College of Arts and Sciences (Modern and Classical Languages Department), co-presented "Dialect Contact in Lima: Perfects vs. Perfectives in Narrative Clauses" with Dr. Carol Klee and Dr. Rocío Caravedo at the 2009 Hispanic Linguistics Symposium Oct. 24. The University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras hosted the symposium.
