Dr. Jan Andrews, School of Social Work, was invited to present her paper, "Champion of Justice: The Contributions of Gisela Knopka," at the International Group Work Symposium Oct. 21 in Toronto, Canada.
Dr. Dave Brennan, Marketing Department and Small Business Institute, gave a presentation, "Market Studies for Lawyers Working in Real Estate," to the Hennepin County Bar Association Oct. 25 in Minneapolis.
Dr. Mitchell Kusy, Organization Learning and Development Department, was the keynote speaker at the "Leadership Coachella Valley" conference in Palm Springs, Calif. The leadership-development conference attracted executives from California for-profit and nonprofit organizations. Kusy focused on critical strategies for successful change management and leadership development.
Kusy also was a keynote presenter at the national conference sponsored by the Medical Group Management Association and the American College of Medical Practice Executives Oct. 19 in Atlanta. Kusy's address was titled "21st Century Leadership That Gets Results." The talk was based on the book that he co-authored with Dr. Louellen Essex, Fast Forward Leadership. The book has been included on the list, "What Corporate America is Reading."
Dr. Joe Fitzharris, History Department, will organize the Society of Military History's session at the Northern Great Plains History Conference. He also was appointed as the society's representative to the conference's Governor's Council.
Dan Gjelten, O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library Center, was a panelist at the second annual Reference Symposium sponsored by the University of Minnesota. The symposium, "From Anecdotes to Evidence: Collecting and Using Data to Improve Reference Services," concentrated on the use of outcome-based measurements to design appropriate and higher-quality library services. The panel responded to keynote addresses by academic library deans from the University of Arizona and the University of North Carolina.
Dr. Joan Vitek Hiller, Sociology Department, was an invited speaker at the Mid-South Sociological Association's annual meetings in Knoxville, Tenn. Hiller spoke on helping academic sociologists make the transition to corporate settings.
Dr. Meg Wilkes Karraker, Sociology Department, is the author of a chapter, "The Gendered Order," in John Palen's Social Problems for the Twenty-First Century.
James Rogers, Center for Irish Studies, attended the Midwest regional meeting of the American Conference for Irish Studies Oct. 13-14 at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich. He presented a paper, "America's First Rediscovery of Ireland: Irish America in the Early 1960s." The paper examined three developments in Irish-American life that coincided with the Kennedy administration era: the origins of Irish studies in the United States, the folk-music revival, and the dramatic rise in American tourism to Ireland.
Dr. Melissa Shepard and Dr. Jeff McLean, Mathematics Department, attended the fall conference of the Minnesota Council of Teachers of Mathematics Oct. 20. Shepard presented "Measuring Angles: A Van Hiele Level Approach to Working With Prottractors," and McLean presented "Roots, Approximations and Continued Fractions." Several UST students also attended the conference.
