Charles Morerod, O.P., has been ordained Bishop of Lausanne, Geneva andFribourg, thus requiring him to end his role as rector of the Pontifical Universityof St. Thomas Aquinas (the Angelicum) and director of the Catholic Studies/Angelicumprogram in Rome.
Bishop Morerod first began teaching at the Angelicum in 1996, becoming a full-timeprofessor of dogmatic theology there in 1999. He served as vice dean of the faculty oftheology and dean of the faculty of philosophy before being appointed rector in 2009. He became the academic director of Catholic studies’ Rome program in 2008.
During an interview in 2010, Morerod spoke of the pleasure of getting to know thestudents from St. Thomas and how those who had been to Rome spoke of the importance of the experience in their lives. He valued the interactions St. Thomas students were able to have with other students at the Angelicum from around the world as well the opportunities lay students and seminarians had to see each other as normal human beings called to specific vocations.
Morerod has been a valued partner with St. Thomas in Rome. Robert G. Kenney, chairof the Department of Catholic Studies, says, Bishop Morerod has been a wonderfulcollaborator and a great gift to our Rome program. We will miss him, and we wishhim every blessing in his new ministry.”
The new director of the academic program is Father Paul Murray, O.P., assisted by Father Allan Moran, O. P. At the time of this printing, a new rector had not yet been named for the Angelicum.
