Simrat Kang and Lorene Pioch win English Majors Essay Contest

The University of St. Thomas English Department has announced that Simrat Kang and Lorene Pioch have been named winners of the annual English Majors Essay Contest.

The contest was open to all English majors who took an upper-level English class during the 2010-2011 academic year. The first place winner is awarded $150 and the second place winner is awarded $75.

Kang won first place with her paper, “Amiri Baraka and James Baldwin: Masculinity as Cultural Representation and Protest,” written for Dr. Martin Warren’s ENGL 380 Issues in English Studies class.

Pioch won second place with “Literary Theory, Feminism, and the Significance of Language,” also written for Warren’s ENGL 380 Issues in English Studies class.

The English Department thanks those majors who submitted essays for this contest.
