What's happening?
Over the past few years, VHS players have become difficult to purchase as the industry moves toward new formats. Stand-alone VHS players have been out of production since 2008 and there is now only one model of combination VHS and DVD player available for purchase that can be integrated into our smart classrooms and presentations spaces.
What are we doing about it?
We have pulled together a group of people in IRT who will be working with faculty and academic departments to plan for transitioning away from using VHS tapes in university classrooms and presentation spaces.
What can you do?
Right now, this group is gathering as much information as possible to understand the scope of VHS use on campus. We understand phasing out VHS playback may result in inconvenience for some members of our community, especially those who have accumulated VHS collections. We'd like to hear from those of you with such collections.
If you have a personal or departmental collection of VHS content that you expect you will continue to need and use in St. Thomas presentation spaces (classrooms, meeting rooms, auditoriums) please lets us know by emailing John Kinsella.
We will be in touch in spring 2012 with more information, including recommendations and timelines.
