Father Marvin O’Connell, an author and church historian, will discuss “A Red Hat For Newman” in a 7:30 p.m. lecture Monday, April 18, in the auditorium of the O’Shaughnessy Educational Center on the St. Paul campus of the University of St. Thomas.
The lecture, free and open to all, is part of the biannual Archbishop Ireland Memorial Lecture Series; it is sponsored by the St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity of the University of St. Thomas.
O’Connell, a 1956 graduate of the St. Paul Seminary, is professor emeritus of history at the University of Notre Dame and a former member of the University of St. Thomas History Department. He is the author of several books, including a biography of Archbishop John Ireland, founder of the seminary and university, and a history of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.
John Henry Newman lived from 1801 to 1890. He was an evangelical Oxford University academic and clergyman who converted to Catholicism in 1845 and was later named a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII. O’Connell will discuss the drama surrounding Newman’s elevation to the College of Cardinals.
Last fall, Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed Newman’s beatification, a milestone on the path to sainthood.
