Freedom to Breathe Act takes effect today; want to quit smoking?

Today, Monday, Oct. 1, Minnesota joins more than 17 other states that have enacted statewide bans on smoking in almost all public places and workplaces.

Now that the Freedom to Breathe Act is in effect, are you looking to quit smoking? The Wellness Center and Student Health Services offer many resources to assist students who want to quit smoking.

Secondhand smoke is a leading cause of preventable death in the United States. According to the American Lung Association, it is estimated that exposure to secondhand smoke yearly kills more then 3,000 adult nonsmokers from lung cancer, approximately 46,000 from coronary heart disease, and 430 newborns from sudden infant death syndrome.

According to the U.S. Surgeon General, there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke.
