In 1996 he founded Aging With Dignity, a nonprofit organization focused on honoring the human dignity of those at the end of life, and from 2002 to 2006 he served under George W. Bush as head of the White House Office for Faith-Based Initiatives.

He served as president of St. Vincent’s College in Latrobe, Pa., from 2006 to 2010. He recently was named as the new president of Ave Maria University in Florida; he will assume that role in July.
