The University of St. Thomas chapters of the National German Honor Society and the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society will induct students 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, in the Leather Room in O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library.
The German National Honor Society
St. Thomas' German program is chartered as chapter Tau Omicron of the German National Honor Society, Delta Phi Alpha.
The following students will be inducted into the National German Honor Society:
- Phillip DeLisle, Class of 2017, German major, international business major
- Morgan E. Kaardal, Class of 2018, German major
- Jessica R. Mohr, Class of 2019, German minor
- Ryan P. Downes, Class of 2019, German minor
- John Plale, Class of 2019, German major, education major
- Rachel Weiss, Class of 2017, German minor, communication and journalism major
- Anthony Schaefer, Class of 2018, German minor, chemistry major
- Natalie Zielke, Class of 2017, German minor, international business major
- Dmitry Nikonov, Class of 2016, German minor, international business major

Qualifications for membership for college students:
- A minimum of two years of college-level German, or the equivalent
- A minimum GPA of B+ (3.3) in German courses
- A minimum cumulative GPA of B- (2.7)
- An indication of continued interest in the study of German language and literature
The German National Honor Society, Delta Phi Alpha (Deutsche Ehrenverbindung), seeks to recognize excellence in the study of German and to provide an incentive for higher scholarship. The society aims to promote the study of the German language, literature and civilization, and endeavors to emphasize those aspects of German life and culture that are of universal value and which contribute to humankind's eternal search for peace and truth. Delta Phi Alpha was founded in 1929 at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where the Alpha Chapter still resides. Currently chapters are active on over 270 college and university campuses in the United States.
The National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society
St. Thomas' Spanish program is chartered as chapter Phi Theta of the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, Sigma Delta Pi. The adviser is professor Jane Tar.

Qualifications for membership for college students:
- Complete three years of study of college-level Spanish, or the equivalent thereof, including at least three semester hours of a course in Hispanic literature or Hispanic culture and civilization at the junior (third-year) level
- A minimum GPA of 3.0 in Spanish courses
- Rank in the upper 35 percent of the class and completed at least three semesters of college work
Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society (La Sociedad Nacional Honoraria Hispánica), was established Nov. 14, 1919, at the University of California Berkeley. The society strives to honor those who attain excellence in the study of the Spanish language and in the study of the literature and culture of the Spanish-speaking peoples; to honor those who have made the Hispanic contributions to modern culture better known in the English-speaking world; to encourage college and university students to acquire a greater interest in and a deeper understanding of Hispanic culture; to foster friendly relations and mutual respect between the nations of Hispanic speech and those of English speech; and to serve its membership in ways that will contribute to the attainment of the goals and ideals of the society.
