Home for the Holidays: Protect yourself and your family – get a flu shot.

The 2011-12 seasonal influenza activity remains sporadic at this time; however, according to the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), last year’s reported cases of the flu began increasing around the first of December (just in time for finals), becoming widespread after the first of the year until the end of March. If you have not yet received a flu shot this year, take the time to protect yourself and others.

Health Services St. Paul will hold the next flu clinic from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, in the lower level of Koch Commons. Flu shots also will continue to be available any time without an appointment at both Health Services St. Paul and Minneapolis during regular hours of operation for all students, faculty and staff. Cost of the flu shot will be submitted to your health insurance plan or $20 if you prefer to pay cash or submit it to your UST account.

Important additional measures to prevent the spread of the flu:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you are sick with flu-like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)
  • While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
