The American Constitution Society will host a breakfast presentation on Monday, April 11, given by Stephen Wermiel, J.D., a Fellow in Law and Government and associate director of the Summer Institute on Law and Government at American University Washington College of Law.

The co-author with Seth Stern of Justice Brennan: Liberal Champion, Wermiel will discuss the book from 8 to 9 a.m. in Room 244 at the St. Thomas School of Law.
Wermiel has taught constitutional law for almost 20 years after serving as the U.S. Supreme Court correspondent for the Wall Street Journal from 1979 to 1991 and as a reporter for the Boston Globe from 1971 to 1979.
Published in October by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Justice Brennan: Liberal Champion is the definitive account of the life of the justice whose 34-year-tenure helped shape the constitutional landscape and define the role of the Supreme Court for decades to come.
The book is based in large measure on more than 60 hours of tape-recorded interviews Brennan did with Wermiel from 1986 to 1990 and on unprecedented access to Brennan’s case files and correspondence. Wermiel will discuss his interactions with Brennan, the insights he learned about Brennan the man and the justice, and the perspective he gained on the workings of the Supreme Court.
The Washington Post included the book on its list of the best nonfiction works of 2010, and the Post reviewer described it as “perhaps the best judicial biography ever written.”
