'Men at Work' Social Work calendar wins merit award

The School of Social Work created a 2006 calendar featuring male College of St. Catherine and University of St. Thomas School of Social Work faculty, staff and alumni. Each month features a male social worker and a humorous twist on readily recognizable social work phrases.

According to Barbara Shank, dean, men are underrepresented in the profession and have much to contribute to client systems of all types and sizes. "We need to recruit more men into our Bachelor of Social Work programs nationwide, and reaching out to men, in a fun, playful way is the goal of this project," Shank explained.

The calendar project was submitted to the Admissions Advertising Awards, a competition among admissions marketing professionals. There are 24 categories, and Men at Work won in the "Calendars, Special Publications" category.

The project was created by Social Work faculty member Barb Berger and photographed by Mike Ekern, University Relations. Calendar pictures and captions from January, February, May and July are shown here.

February: "Social Workers Celebrate the Uniqueness of Each Individual " (Jon Ruzek) May: "Social Workers Think Outside the Box " (David Roseborough) July: "Social Workers Practice Self-care" (Brom Johnson)
