Father Edward “Monk” Malloy, C.S.C., president emeritus of Notre Dame and current member of the University of St. Thomas Board of Trustees, has published the second of a projected three-volume memoir. Titled Monk’s Tale: Way Stations on the Journey, this book presents the personality and tenacity of a young priest as he assumes greater responsibilities on a path toward the presidency of Notre Dame.

In this second volume, Malloy continues his story from becoming a member of the Notre Dame faculty in 1974 to his election as the university’s 16th president, serving from 1987 to 2005.
His journey in this volume begins with the various administrative responsibilities he undertook on the seminary staff and in the Theology Department during his early years as an administrator and teacher. It continues through his tenure as vice president and associate provost, up to the process that led to his selection as Notre Dame’s president. He reveals his day-to-day responsibilities and the challenges they presented as well as the ways in which his travel away from campus gave him a broader view of the opportunities and issues facing higher education.
This candid and revealing book provides an account of Malloy’s many commitments as a teacher, scholar and pastor; as a staff person in an undergraduate residence hall; and as a board member in a variety of nonprofit organizations.
Malloy has served on the St. Thomas board since 1995 and is former chair of its Academic Affairs Committee. He also served on the advisory board that recommended the reopening of St. Thomas' School of Law. Malloy received an honorary doctor of humane letters degree from St. Thomas in May 1994, when he gave the commencement address. He is profiled in this winter 2000 story in St. Thomas magazine.
His account includes a chapter devoted to his 15 years as a participant in the process that led to Ex Corde Ecclesiae, Pope John Paul II’s apostolic constitution on Catholic higher education, and its implementation in the United States.

Both the first and this second installment of Malloy’s memoir are published by the University of Notre Dame Press. The first volume, Monk’s Tale: The Pilgrimage Begins, 1941-1975, was published in 2009.
