Sister M. Christine Athans, B.V.M., professor emerita, St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity, presented a paper, "Judaism and Catholic Prayer: A New Horizon for Liturgy and Spirituality," in a session, "The Impact of Judaism on Catholic Life and Thought Since Nostra Aetate," at the American Catholic Historical Association convention last month in Washington, D.C. Her review of A Dictionary of Jewish-Christian Relations (Cambridge University Press, 2006) was published in Theological Studies. She has a forthcoming review of Interfaith Encounters in America by Kate McCarthy (Rutgers University Press, 2007) that will appear in American Catholic Studies. She continues to teach part time at Loyola University in Chicago and at the Catholic Theological Union.
Dr. John Conbere and Dr. Alla Heorhiadi, School of Education (Organizational Learning and Development Department), are co-authors of an article, "Energetics and OD, " published in the winter issue of the OD Practitioner, the journal of the Organization Development Network. Their article describes working with subtle energies in organizational development interventions.
Dr. Jeff McLean, College of Arts and Sciences (Mathematics Department), attended the joint meetings of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America Jan. 6-9 in San Diego, Calif. He gave a talk, "Going ‘Round in Circles," which featured some foundational work from his recent sabbatical project.
Dr. Leslie Adrienne Miller, College of Arts and Sciences (English Department), is a finalist for a Minnesota Book Award in the poetry category for her collection, The Resurrection Trade , published by Graywolf Press. She also was interviewed on the podcast, New Letters on the Air: Writers in Their Own Voices, which will be available for download until Feb. 6.
Dr. Debra Petersen, College of Arts and Sciences (Communication and Journalism Department), presented a paper, "One Less (Woman Who Will Experience Cervical Cancer); An Applied Communication Study of the Campaign to Immunize Girls and Young Women against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV)," at the Hawaii International Conference on Arts and Humanities Jan. 20 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her paper also appeared in the conference proceedings.
Dr. Kevin Theissen, College of Arts and Sciences (Geology Department), is the author of an article, " Multidecadal to Century Scale Arid Episodes on the Northern Altiplano During the Middle Holocene," published in the Feb. 1 issue of the peer-reviewed journal Palaeogeography, Palaeoecology, Palaeoclimatology. Theissen explored geochemical evidence for several drought episodes during which water levels at Lake Titicaca (Bolivia/Peru) dropped dramatically (30-45 meters) over short time periods between 5,400 and 7,000 years ago.
Dr. Martin Warren, College of Arts and Sciences (English Department), is the author of an article, "Devising the Appropriate Program of Studies for the 21st-Century English Major: The Consumer as Designer," published in the fall 2007 Minnesota English Journal.
