Dr. Donald Anderson, Engineering and Technology Management Department, received a one-year, $71,800 grant from National Football League Charities to support research in the Biomechanics Laboratory of the Minneapolis Sports Medicine Center. Anderson directs the laboratory. The research project, titled "MR Staging of Healing to Enable Accelerated Rehabilitation Following IGF-I Boosted Rotator Cuff Repair," aims to accelerate people's recovery from rotator cuff surgery.
Dr. Bonnie Holte Bennett, Quantitative Methods and Computer Science Department and Graduate Programs in Software, recently was recognized by the Governor's Office of the state of Minnesota. Bennett has served on several nomination review committees screening résumés and prioritizing candidates for a variety of boards, panels and committees with appointments from the Governor's Office. Bennett reviewed candidates for technology, education and environmental boards. A recognition reception was held at the governor's mansion.
Dr. Stephen Brookfield, School of Education, is the author of a chapter, "The Concept of Critically Reflective Practice," in a new book, Handbook of Adult and Continuing Education, edited by A.L. Wilson and E.R. Hayes (San Francisco: Jossey-Bass Publishers, 2000).
Dr. Mel Gray, Graduate School of Business, has been elected to the executive board of the Association for Cultural Economics International. The association's membership consists of economists, other social scientists, policy makers and arts managers who share an interest in the economic aspects of art and culture. Gray was the local arrangements coordinator when ACEI held its biannual conference at UST's Minneapolis campus in May.
Dr. Brenda Kroschel, Mathematics Department, presented a paper, "The Totally Non-Negative Completion Problem," which she co-authored with Charles R. Johnson of the College of William and Mary, at a minisymposium on totally non-negative matrices at the seventh SIAM Conference on Applied Linear Algebra in Raleigh-Durham, N.C.
James Rogers, Center for Irish Studies, was the featured speaker at the quarterly meeting of the Irish Genealogical Society International Nov. 18 at the Minnesota Genealogy Center in Golden Valley. Rogers' presentation, "Irisih Writers and Vanished Grannies," examined how several Irish and Irish-American writers have dealt with genealogy in their poetry and prose.
John Tschida, Health and Human Performance Department, is the author of an article, "Become a Hitter and Not a Swinger!" in Fastpitch Delivery, the newspaper of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, Vol. 5, No. 15, pages 28-29. Tschida also is scheduled to speak at the NFCA national convention in San Antonio, Texas; the NFCA Coaching Clinic in Columbus, Ga., the Minnesota High School Coaches Association's clinic; and clinics at Eden Prairie, Hopkins, Eastview, Sartell, Holy Angels/Richfield, Blue Earth, Austin and North St. Paul high schools. He is hosting clinics over the holidays and on Sundays until February at St. Thomas. In addition to teaching, Tschida is the head fastpitch softball coach at UST.
