Public Safety Advisory: Suspicious Person Reported in Yard of Student's Off-campus Residence

Public Safety would like to advise the University of St. Thomas community of a suspicious incident that occurred on the 1900 block of Portland Avenue.

At 11 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, a St. Thomas student reported she had seen an unidentified male suspect in the backyard of her off-campus residence the previous two nights. The student reported the incidents to the St. Paul Police Department. SPPD informed the student they took the suspect into custody earlier on Sept. 10. Media reports have since identified the suspect, as well as reporting he has been previously convicted of privacy/peeping offenses.

Public Safety wants to stress that the student’s timely reporting of the incidents helped facilitate SPPD’s response and apprehension of the suspect.

Additionally, Public Safety has learned of several home/garage burglaries in the surrounding campus neighborhoods reported to SPPD since the start of the month. There is no information linking the incidents with the aforementioned suspect. We are sharing this to emphasize the importance of off-campus residents being vigilant and contacting SPPD when an incident occurs.

Anyone with information regarding these crimes is urged to call Public Safety at (651) 962-5100 or the St. Paul Police Department at (651) 291-1111.
