Ready, Set, Read!

The UST First Book group ventured off-campus this week for their second reading at Nellie Stone Johnson on the North side of Minneapolis.  I was part of a ten person volunteer team that committed an hour of their time to reading to a group of K-4 students. As part of an after school YMCA program, volunteers read to students for approximately 30 minutes and wrapped up their time with students by giving each student a book of their very own.

First Book provides new books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy – access to books.

In the midst of a demanding and exhilarating Full-time MBA program, UST MBA students understand the value and importance of a solid educational foundation.  Since the inception of the UST First Book group in 2009, committed volunteers read to students, two times per semester at Nellie Stone Johnson.  Their success has resulted in the group expanding into two other schools in Minneapolis, Anne Sullivan and Sheridan.

As a person who is passionate about education and community service, volunteering with First Book brought back memories of my days as a junior high school teacher.  Everyone can commit to an hour of “enriching young minds, hearts, and souls!”  I would urge you to sign up for a First Book reading.  If you’re interested in volunteering, visit the UST First Book website.
