Selim Center Announces Spring Programs for Those 50 and Older

The University of St. Thomas Selim Center for Learning in Later Years has announced its spring schedule of short courses that are tailored for those 50 and older.

The center, which first began offering programs in 1973, will offer 10 programs that meet in April and May on the university’s St. Paul and Minneapolis campuses. Fees range from $15 to $80.

The spring offerings and professors are:

Six-session courses:

  • Culture Stew Series (stories from Italy, France, Spain, Argentina and Peru) with Shirley Nieto-Flores
  • The Stories "Stuff" Tell: A Material Culture Approach to American History (about museum collections) with Dr. Annette Atkins
  • Arcane Mysteries: A Study of World Mythology with Dr. Charles Nelson
  • The Science of Natural Disasters with Dr. Rebecca Clotts
  • Music Sampler Series with six St. Thomas music faculty members
  • A Political Junkie’s Guide to the 2016 Elections with Dr. David Schultz
  • The Tudors: Monarchs and People in 16th Century England with Dr. Will Cavert

Three-session course:

  • Ireland at 100: A Century of Creativity, hosted by James Rogers

Two single-session lunch talks:

  • The Face of Poverty: The Widow, the Orphan and the Stranger with Father Larry Snyder
  • Putin’s Power Game at Home and Abroad with Dr. Nicholas Hayes
