St. Thomas alumnus Will Steger to receive Lindbergh Foundation award

Polar explorer and University of St. Thomas graduate Will Steger will be the first Minnesotan to receive a Lindbergh Award. It will be presented May 19 at ceremonies at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul.

The Lindbergh Foundation is presenting two awards this year, one to Steger and one to Dr. Peter Diamandis, head of the X Prize Foundation, sponsor of a $10 million private space-flight competition.

The theme for this year’s award event is “exploring extreme challenges,” explained Lindbergh Foundation President Marlene White. “Dr. Diamandis offers extreme challenges to society to explore innovative solutions to world issues, and Will Steger is an explorer who goes to the extreme edges of the world to bring awareness to the challenge of climate change.”

Nina Archabal, director of the Minnesota Historical Society, noted that “Will Steger and Charles Lindbergh exemplify the passion for adventure that is a strong theme in Minnesota’s history.”
