Students from Genocide Intervention Network present at state conference
Three students from the Genocide Intervention Network-St. Thomas chapter participated in a panel presentation at the recent joint meeting of the Sociologists of Minnesota and the Wisconsin Sociological Association. Dr. Ellen Kennedy, professor and adviser to the GI-Net chapter, organized the panel.
The topic, "Education About Genocide in Rwanda and Darfur," featured UST students Jenny Le and Ben Nebo and University of Minnesota student (formerly at St. Thomas) Ina Zeigler. Kennedy spoke about public sociology and the three-stage approach used in her classes: education, community partnership and social action.
Chris Nevin, director of volunteer services at Lincoln International High School in Minneapolis, described the connections between classroom learning and outreach. The students, all board members of the Genocide Intervention Network, talked about the impetus for the organization, the mission, activities and upcoming special events, and important national efforts such as economic divestment from companies supporting dictatorial and genocidal regimes.
