St. Paul Seminary Presents Organ Soloist Dr. Brian Luckner on May 11

Dr. Brian Luckner, director of music at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in La Crosse, Wis., will present a solo organ recital at 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, at St. Mary’s Chapel at the St. Paul Seminary. He will perform works of Bach, Bruhns, Buxtehude, Near and Leighton.

St. Mary’s Chapel, 2260 Summit Ave. on the University of St. Thomas campus in St. Paul, is home to a 22-stop mechanical pipe organ by Fritz Noack. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information call (651) 962-5793.

Luckner served as head of the Conference of Roman Catholic Cathedral Musicians from 1997 to 2002. Prior to his appointment in La Crosse, he was the assistant in liturgical music at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. Earlier church positions include serving as organist and music director at the Church of the Guardian Angels and at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Cincinnati, and at Christ Episcopal Church in Oberlin, Ohio. He previously held assistant organist positions at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Canton, Ohio, and at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Massillon, Ohio.

He holds a doctor of musical arts degree and a master of music degree from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, and the bachelor of music degree from the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. He participated in the "Accelerated Bachelor of Music Program for High School Students" at the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Awards include election to the national honorary music society Pi Kappa Lambda, the Selby Houston Memorial Award in Organ and Theory at Oberlin, and the University of Cincinnati Organ Playing Competition: Strader Awards (first place in 1981, second place in 1983).
