Greg Scharine, Matthew Sullivan, Jacob Wakem, and Kiana Williams have been voted finalists for the 2012 Tommie Award.
Preliminary voting of the 16 nominees ended Wednesday, and four finalists emerged due to a tie in votes from students, faculty and staff. The vote to determine the Tommie Award winner will be held in mid-February.
Greg Scharine is majoring in operations and supply chain management. He has been a member of Undergraduate Student Government for four years and currently serves as the president. He has been a student liaison to the St. Thomas Board of Trustees for three years. He also worked with Admissions as a Tommie ambassador, tour guide and Tommie blogger.
Matthew Sullivan
Matthew Sullivan is majoring in financial management. He played on the varsity football team and is now the head manager for the team. He is the senior class senator for the Undergraduate Student Government. He also serves on the University of St. Thomas Budget Advisory Committee and the Executive Board for Up ’til Dawn.
Jacob Wakem is majoring in communication and journalism. He served as a resident adviser in Cretin Hall for two years and is currently the operations anager of Ireland Hall. He was the Student Programming Board intern for STAR for two years. He also was a Talking Circles peer adviser and served as a VISION leader to Montana and California.

Kiana Williams is majoring in social work. She has been involved on campus as a resident adviser, an orientation leader and a STAR intern. She is the director of the University of St. Thomas Gospel Choir and the choreographer of PULSE.
“We had a great group of nominees this year who have made significant contributions to the university community,” said award coordinator Vern Klobassa, director of student engagement. “I wish to congratulate each nominee and express gratitude for the outstanding contributions each has made.”

The 12 other nominees were: John Baumgardner, Logan Crotty, Carolyn Dienhart, David Hackworthy, Erika Jarnes, Ryan O’Shaughnessy, Katrina Pauly, Tyler Petersen, Katelyn Ryan, Jared Scharpen, Solome Tibebu and Christina Weiberg.
The Tommie Award has been presented since 1931 to a St. Thomas senior. The award recognizes achievement in scholarship, leadership and campus involvement, and represents the highest ideals of the university.
