UST-CSC Theater Department to present ‘You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown’ March 8-11

The joint Theater Department of the University of St. Thomas and the College of St. Catherine will present “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” the musical adventures of the lovable loser and his friends, at 7 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, March 8-11, in Foley Theater on the St. Thomas campus.

Tickets are $5 for general admission and free to students, faculty and staff with ID from the Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities (St. Thomas, St. Catherine, Augsburg College, Macalester College and Hamline University). Seating is limited; reservations will be taken at The O'Shaughnessy Ticket Office at St. Catherine, (651) 690-6700.

When “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” first was staged on March 7, 1967, at Theater 80 in New York City, there was no real script. The six young actors were armed mostly with 10 songs and 10 years’ worth of cartoons by “Peanuts” creator and Twin Cities native Charles Schulz. The musical moved to Broadway’s John Golden Theater for a month in 1971. Since then, it has become one of the most produced musicals in history, a perennial favorite with amateur theater, school and college troupes.

Look for all the “Peanuts” gang and tunes such as “Happiness” that have become classic American standards. Clark Gesner, who created the music and lyrics for the play, noted in the foreword to the Random House edition of the script that the play’s success could be attributed largely to Schulz’s “immensely human view of the world and his special ability to say it for all of us.”

The UST-CSC production is the musical’s 1999 Tony Award-winning revival version and includes UST seniors Peter Heeringa (Charlie Brown) and Devin Malone (Linus), UST freshmen Hailey Heisick (Sally) and Jim Moen (Schroeder), UST junior Tyler Tigges (Snoopy), and CSC sophomore Helen Buron (Lucy). Dr. Mark Seamon, assistant professor of theater, directs.
