UST to Serve as Polling Place for Nov. 8 General Election

St. Thomas students who live on the main (north) campus or in the neighborhood immediately north of Summit Avenue will have to walk no farther than McNeely Hall to vote in the St. Paul general election on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

The McNeely Great Room again will serve as the official polling place for Ward 4, Precinct 6, which is the area bounded by Summit, Prior, Marshall and Cretin avenues. Resident students who live in Brady, Dowling, Ireland, John Paul II, Morrison, Murray, Flynn or St. John Vianney Seminary halls will vote in the Great Room, as will commuter students living in the precinct.

Students who live on the south campus or in the neighborhood immediately south of Summit Avenue are in Ward 4, Precinct 7, and vote at Groveland Recreation Center, 2021 St. Clair Ave. This includes resident students who live in Grace and Cretin Halls, the Child Development Center, the St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity and in the houses or apartment buildings at 2110 Summit and 2085, 2109, 2151, 2171 and 2175 Grand Ave.

If you live elsewhere in St. Paul and need to know where to vote, see the Ramsey County’s Elections Precinct Finder.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Races on the general election ballot in Precincts 6 and 7 are to elect a city council member for Ward 4 and four at-large school board members. For the first time, city council members will be elected by rank voting. For more information check out the Ramsey County Elections website .

Anyone who wants to vote needs to be a registered voter for the precinct in which they live. Minnesota has same-day registration. To assist with this process, rosters of all resident students, including St. John Vianney Seminary and the St. Paul Seminary, have been provided to county election officials. All these students need to do is then show their UST photo idenfication card with their name at one of the two polling places listed above.

If you vote at another polling place, you can register by providing one document from EACH of the following two groups:

GROUP A: Establishes identity (must include your name and photo)

  • Minnesota driver's license with a previous address
  • Minnesota ID card with a previous address
  • U.S. passport
  • U.S. military ID card
  • Tribal ID card
  • Minnesota university, college, or technical college ID card

Group B: Establishes residency (must include your name and address)

  • Utility bill due within 30 days of the election day:
    • Telephone (landline, cell, VOIP, etc.)
    • TV (cable satellite, etc.)
    • Internet services
    • Electric
    • Gas
    • Solid waste
    • Sewer services
    • Water
  • Rent statement dated within 30 days of the election that itemizes utilities
  • Current student fee statement that includes your address

If you are unable to provide the documentation above, a registered voter from your precinct can accompany you to the polling place and affirm that you live in the precinct.

The voter-registration cards that students will sign at polling places ask them to verify that they have been a resident of Minnesota for 20 days.

To accommodate neighborhood residents who drive to McNeely, St. Thomas is reserving some spots in Lot K, immediately south of McNeely, for voter parking from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday.
