Abortion will be the hot topic on the University of St. Thomas downtown Minneapolis campus on Friday, Oct. 4, when the university’s Murphy Institute for Catholic Thought, Law and Public Policy brings in historian Gail Bederman and author Erika Bachiochi to debate: “Is Legal Abortion Necessary for Sexual Equality in the U.S.A.?”
The event will be held at 12:30 p.m. in Room 235 of the School of Law building on the university’s Minneapolis campus.
Bachiochi is a lawyer and author of Embodied Equality: Debunking Equal Protection Arguments for Abortion Rights. Bederman is an author and associate professor of U.S. history for the University of Notre Dame.
This event is free and open to the public as part of the Murphy Institute’s “Hot Topics: Cool Talk” series. Complimentary lunch will be provided to those who register in advance.
Also Oct. 4 at the School of Law, the Journal of Law and Public Policy will host its fall symposium, “From Abortion to Infanticide: The Gosnell Case.” This event will bring together speakers from Notre Dame Law School, the University of Georgia Law, the University of Utah School of Medicine, the University of Massachusetts School of Law, and Alliance Defending Freedom. Presentations will center on the case of Dr. Kermit Gosnell, who in May 2013 was convicted of murder and performing illegal abortions.
Both events follow the Oct. 3 evening lecture “Growing Up in a Culture of Choice,” presented by the University of St. Thomas Prolife Center at 7 p.m. in Room 150 of Owens Science Hall on the university’s St. Paul campus. Bachiochi is the featured lecturer for that event.
