More than 600 deaths occur every year in the United States from bicycle accidents, and 75 percent of these deaths are due to the rider not wearing a helmet. This data doesn't include the countless serious head injuries from crashes.
Minnesota also requires all bicycles riders to have a front and rear light visible from 500 feet away at night.
The package that the St. Thomas bike club, Bike Enthusiasts at St. Thomas (BEAST), put together and the Wellness Center will distribute can provide for both of these needs.
"I always wear my helmet," said Jason Onerheim, a UST graduate student and BEAST member. “It has saved my life at least three times, the most memorable being a few years ago when a car ran a red light and crashed into me. My bike was trashed and I had severe bruising on my leg, but my head was OK."
