CILCE Corner: Congratulations!

The Center for Intercultural Learning and Community Engagement (CILCE) and the office of Service-Learning would like to congratulate this year’s Recognition Reception nominees. Yesterday evening the office of Service-Learning and CILCE gathered together, along with students, staff, faculty and community partners. All congregated in the Anderson Student Center's Iversen Hearth Room as Eleni Roulis, associate vice president for academic services and special programs, opened the reception with a warm welcome.

Recognition and awards were given to:

  • Mitch Hinnenkamp, recognized as this year’s St. Thomas Phillips Scholar
  • Sarah Farnes, CILCE Student Award
  • Angela Michel, Service-Learning Student Award
  • Alexandra Campion, Service-Learning Graduate Student Award
  • Barbara Gorski, recognizd for 20 years of Business 200
  • Fred Wells Tennis and Education Center, CILCE Community Partner Award
  • Gerald Schlabach, Service-Learning Faculty Award

As awards were announced, the Hearth Room became full of praise, thanks and many hugs. Those invited to take part in the festivities were seated around the room to show their support for the nominees. Everyone appeared to recognize everyone and shared an abundance of stories with one another. There was a clear appreciation felt by all, including myself.

It’s in moments like these that we are able to realize a greater meaning and purpose in life. CILCE and Service-Learning are programs that wholeheartedly understand and support the university's mission. Our programs instill hope and reinforce faith in young students who may lack a positive mentor in their lives.

The reception program featured a quote that I would like to share with all of you:

“Love recognizes no barriers.
It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls
to arrive at its destination full of hope.”

~Maya Angelou

Closing the Recognition Reception, Eleni Roulis gave a final "thanks" to everyone. CILCE and the office of Service-Learning would like to thank the nominees one last time today. You are greatly appreciated, and without caring students like you, our programs would cease to exist. You are a great model to our youth and we are proud to be a part of your lives.

We wish our seniors success and the best of luck with the next chapter of their lives.
