February performances:
- 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, in Brady Educational Center auditorium: The Arpeggione Duo – guitarist and St. Thomas faculty member Christopher Kachian and Swedish cellist Thomas Schönberg, dean of Lidingo School of Music in Stockholm – will perform a concert of modern folkloric music from Yugoslavia, Turkey and Brazil. On the program are compositions by Dusan Bogdanovich, Gilbert Biberian and Radamés Gnattali. The pair met in 2004 at the Guitar Festival of Sollentuna, Sweden, where they discovered a mutual passion for playing and performing new music composed for guitar and cello. Since then they have performed together in both of their countries.
- 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, in St. Mary’s Chapel, 2260 Summit Ave.: The Society for the Doctrinal Affectation of Baroque Music – whose very name pokes fun at the perceived snootiness of classical music aficionados — presents what could be its 10th annual concert (not completely sure, but we’re close). The Society (St. Thomas faculty members Christopher Kachian, guitar and vihuela; David Jenkins, organ and harpsichord; and art historian Michelle Nordtorp-Madson) promises a musical performance, visual treats and scintillating commentary. This year the evening centers on music and art of the Anglo-Spanish War period (1680-1720). Selections include compositions by John Dowland, William Byrd, Luys de Narvaez and others. But if you think this might be a stuffy snooze, guess again. This lively trio of St. Thomas faculty members knows how to have fun with music and art.
- 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, in Brady Educational Center auditorium: UST student Ashley Borree presents a voice recital.
