Dease 'highly recommends' pope's message
I had the great fortune to meet last week with Pope Benedict XVI and to hear him speak to presidents of Catholic colleges and universities in Washington, D.C., and to the United Nations in New York City.
I presented the pope with a photo of him holding the citation accompanying the Doctor of Humane Letters degree that he received from St. Thomas when he visited this campus as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, prefect of the Vatican’s Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith. He responded with a hearty laugh and said he thought his visit must have been around 1986. I noted that it was two years earlier – Feb. 13, 1984, to be exact – and that I was impressed that he would have remembered the occasion.
I also gave Pope Benedict a bound copy of collection of 2007 issues of Logos: A Journal of Catholic Thought and Culture, which is published quarterly by the Center for Catholic Studies at St. Thomas. We also will provide bound copies of previous issues to the Vatican.
I found the pope’s speeches to be superb, and highly recommend that you read his address to Catholic educators.
