Dr. Mary Ann Ryan to speak at Feminist Friday this week
Dr. Mary Ann Ryan, Division of Student Affairs (Campus and Residence Life), will give a presentation Friday, Dec. 5, on "Women Who Build Buildings: Student Affairs Professionals' Experiences."
This Feminist Friday event will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in the Luann Dummer Center for Women, Room 103, O'Shaughnessy Educational Center. Bring your lunch; cookies and beverages will be provided. Everyone is welcome.
Ryan's presentation reviews qualitative research that examines the experiences of 10 women in student affairs who championed a building project that enhanced the student co-curricular experience.
Themes embedded in the women's experiences include: the status of student affairs and the women, the way things work for the women, the impact of their gender, how their knowledge and expertise in student affairs affected their work; and the buildings' legacies.
An analysis of the strategies employed by the women to build their buildings serves as a framework for discussion about implications of status, knowledge, power and gender in higher education for student affairs practitioners.
