The Siena Symposium for Women, Family and Culture will host a panel discussion on “Religious Liberty and the Equality of Women” from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, in 3M Auditorium, Owens Science Hall.
Featured will be a panel of three University of St. Thomas faculty members:
- Teresa Collett, J.D., School of Law
- Dr. Deborah Savage, St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity
- Dr. R. Mary Lemmons, Philosophy
Dr. Jeanne Buckeye, Opus College of Business, Ethics and Business Law, will serve as moderator.
The panel discussion, free and open to the public, is a response to the Catholic bishops’ request that Catholics study and reflect on religious liberty, “our first most cherished freedom,” during the period of June 22 to July 4. The aim of this event is to consider the claim that the vision of the Catholic bishops on this issue is somehow in conflict with women's freedom.
The event is co-sponsored by the Minnesota Catholic Conference.
The Siena Symposium for Women, Family and Culture, an interdisciplinary faculty group, was founded at the University of St. Thomas in 2003 and has been hosted at the St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity since fall 2010. Its mission is to cultivate a deeper understanding of the role of women in the church and society.
According to its website, the symposium strives “to enable both men and women to grasp and live out their God-given nature and dignity as they work together to build up the Body of Christ and establish a culture of life.”
