Dr. Sherry Jordon, Theology Department, will speak on “Anne Askew: Martyr of the English Reformation” at this week's Feminist Friday.
The event, free and open to everyone, will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, in the Luann Dummer Center for Women, Room 103, O’Shaughnessy Educational Center.
Jordon’s talk will examine the reasons Askew was burned at the stake during Henry VIII’s reign: for her denial of transubstantiation and her refusal to implicate other women in her reformist views. In Askew’s account of the interrogations that lead to her death, she uses her gender and her knowledge of scripture to defend her views and to criticize her accusers.
Those attending are invited to bring a lunch; cookies and beverages will be provided.
