Associate Dean of Students to Speak at Final Fall Feminist Friday

The Luann Dummer Center for Women will host its final Feminist Friday for fall semester on Friday, Dec. 2. Advisory board member Tori Svoboda, associate dean of students at St. Thomas, will speak on “Constructing Class: The Experiences of White Women Student Affairs Professionals From Working-Class Backgrounds.”

Svoboda, who also teaches in the Leadership in Student Affairs graduate program, is completing her doctorate in leadership. She notes that while ample literature exists regarding the experiences of working-class students and faculty in higher education, there are no known studies about socioeconomic class as experienced by staff. Her research documents the complexity of class, how it is shaped by one’s race and gender, as well as reproduced through social institutions such as schools, families and professional organizations.

The event will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in the women’s center, Room 103, O’Shaughnessy Educational Center. Feminist Fridays are free and everyone is welcome. Bring a lunch; beverages and dessert will be served.
