Student Diversity and Inclusion Services will host the Minnesota premiere of the award-winning documentary “First Generation” on Thursday, April 26. This 95-minute documentary, narrated by Golden Globe nominee Blair Underwood, covers the span of three years and follows the lives of four first-generation high school students from California.
An inner-city athlete, a small-town waitress, a Samoan warrior dancer, and the daughter of migrant field workers set out to break the cycle of poverty and bring hope to their families and communities by pursuing a college education. Included are the opinions of education experts who explore issues of college access for first-generation and low-income students.
The event, free and open to the public, will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in the John R. Roach Center for the Liberal Arts auditorium, Room 126.
Following the film, a faculty member, a staff member and a student will serve as a panel of respondents, sharing their perceptions of what the film got right, or not, and how it relates to their experiences.
