Groundbreaking ceremony, reception scheduled June 9 for new business education building

Ground will be broken for St. Thomas' new business education building at a ceremony scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 9, at the construction site on Summit Avenue between Cleveland Avenue and Finn Street.

Speakers at the ceremony will include Father Dennis Dease, the university's president; Dr. Christopher Puto, dean of the College of Business; and Jay Benanav, the St. Paul City Council member who represents the area and played a primary role in the negotiations with the neighborhood's community councils and interest groups, leading to the agreement allowing St. Thomas to proceed with the project.

The university community and the public are cordially invited, and a reception will follow.

Construction on the first phase of the business education building and underground parking garage on the site of Christ Child Hall began the week of May 23. The project includes a three-story, 75,000-square-foot business building atop a one-level, 121-car garage. The project will take 15 months to complete, with the facility opening in time for the 2006-07 academic year.
