In the News: Ali Ling on Forever Chemicals in Minnesota

Ali Ling, assistant professor of civil engineering at the University of St. Thomas School of Engineering, recently spoke to WCCO Radio on PFAS in Minnesota drinking water.

Host: How extensive are Minnesota cities battling to rid PFAS from their water supply?

Ling: Minnesota cities, especially in the east metro, have had historic contamination of some of their drinking water supplies with these chemicals. They have higher levels of PFAS than a lot of other places in the country. A lot of these cities have now installed plants that are specifically targeting and removing these chemicals, and some of them have been funded by settlement money from 3M that has gone through the state of Minnesota.

Host: Are we just going to have plastics in our bodies now?

Ling: With plastics, PFAS and a lot of these chemical pollutants, it is always going to be the dose that makes the poison. It is very popular to call chemicals toxic, but that’s not necessarily a meaningful way to talk about it, as it depends on how much you get and how much is in your body.
