In the MPR News podcast episode titled "Talking Sense: Why grief has the power to unite us or divide us," host Angela Davis discusses the complexities of grief with guest Melissa Lundquist, an associate professor in the School of Social Work and director of the undergraduate social work program at the University of St. Thomas. Lundquist, along with guest Stacy Remke, a clinical social worker, discussed how everyone grieves differently and that "there is no right way to grieve."
All three women whose mothers have passed away, discussed that grief goes beyond death and dying. It could be about the loss of a career or the loss of a lifestyle.
From the epsiode:
Lundquist said that grief is “multidimensional because it can be expressed in our body, it can be expressed in our thinking, it can be expressed emotionally and, very obviously, it can be expressed spiritually.”
She added that “oftentimes what people get told is to go see a therapist when they're grieving to alleviate the pain. … What they need is some type of connection. Maybe it's a therapist, maybe it's their neighbor, maybe it's their pet, maybe it's nature, maybe it's internally, maybe it's even their faith. There's different ways that we find and build connections.”
