Investigation of John Paul II hate crimes continues

The investigation continues into a series of hate crimes that took place in late October in the John Paul II residence hall on the St. Paul campus of the University of St. Thomas.

While the university’s Department of Public Safety and the St. Paul Police Department are involved in the investigation, the lead investigation team is from the FBI.

“While we have no major updates to announce, this is an active case and the FBI remains very much involved in the investigation,” said Daniel Meuwissen, director of the university’s Department of Public Safety. “Investigations of this nature are time-consuming and sometimes can be lengthy.”

In related news, the U.S. Justice Department, at the invitation of St. Thomas’ Department of Public Safety, will present a training course here on dealing with hate crimes.

St. Thomas Public Safety and local law enforcement agencies will participate in the course, which will cover investigation methods as well as the impact of hate crimes on victims and the community. The training will take place on the St. Thomas campus in January 2008.
