The University of St. Thomas School of Law’s Community Justice Project will host “How Are the Children? Part IV: A Symposium Exploring the Impact of Parental Incarceration on Children.”
The symposium will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, in the School of Law’s atrium. It will bring together community leaders, social workers, educators and others within the juvenile justice field to discuss their experiences concerning topics related to children of incarcerated parents and develop methods for ministering to the needs of these youth in a holistic manner.
An estimated 2.3 million children have parents who are incarcerated. More than 15,000 of those children live in Minnesota. The symposium will include four panels exploring the consequences of parental incarceration; educators’ response to children of incarcerated parents; the role of social services in addressing the needs of children of incarcerated parents; and policy implications and potential solutions.
