Mark your calendar for UST concerts, recitals

October performances:

• 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, in St. Mary’s Chapel, 2260 Summit Ave.: Dr. David Jenkins, liturgical music director at the university's St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity, will give a faculty organ recital featuring the music of Bach, De Grigny, Mendelssohn, Dupré and Peeters.This academic year marks the 10^th anniversary of the chapel’s 22-stop Noack pipe organ, dedicated as the Cyril E. Rotter Memorial Organ on May 7, 2000. It is recognized as one of the finest instruments of its type and was featured during the 2008 American Guild of Organists National Convention.

• 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, in Orchestra Hall, 1111 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis: The UST Bands and Choirs will give a fall concert in one of the Twin Cities' premier venues.The UST Bands include the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, directed by Dr. Matthew George, and the Symphonic Band, directed by Dr. Douglas Orzolek. The ensemble will perform works by Arnold, Copland (“The Promise of Living”) and Bernstein; the band will play works by Hartley, Marquardt and John Philip Sousa.The 75-member Concert Choir will sing works by Ames, Mozart and Nystedt; the 45-member Chamber Singers will premiere their repertoire for the Nov. 14 Minnesota Collegiate Choral Festival, performing works by LeJeune, Debussy, Gwyneth Walker, Michael McGlynn and Jay Broeker. The 120-member Festival Choir will sing a Spanish processional and an American Gospel tune, “Let Everything That Hath Breath.” Dr. Angela Broeker and Nathan Knoll direct the choirs.

• 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, in Brady Educational Center auditorium: St. Thomas’ annual High School Honor Band Festival draws many of the finest high school performers from across the region. This concert is the culmination of daylong rehearsals, clinics and master classes given by UST music faculty.   Dr. Andrew Boysen Jr., of the  University of New Hampshire, is the featured guest composer and conductor for this year’s festival.

In early November:

• 8:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, in the Chapel of St. Thomas Aquinas: St. Thomas’ Liturgical Choir, conducted by founding director Robert Strusinski, will sing Andrew Wright’s “A Requiem of Peace” on All Souls’ Day.
