Memorial Service is Saturday for Charles 'Lefty' Smith

A memorial service for 1951 University of St. Thomas graduate and renowned University of Notre Dame hockey coach Charles “Lefty” Smith will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 14, in the cafeteria of South St. Paul High School, 700 Second St. N., South St. Paul.

Smith, grandfather of Nicole Smith, a master’s student in English at St. Thomas, was a longtime hockey coach at South St. Paul High School and went on to be head coach at Notre Dame from 1968 to 1987. The new hockey rink there is named in his honor.

Smith died unexpectedly in his sleep Jan. 2, a day before his 82nd birthday.

A presentation at Saturday’s memorial service begins at 4 p.m. Among those speaking will be 1951 St. Thomas graduates Dan Dolan and Jack O’Brien.
