Theologian, Neuroscientist to Discuss 'Neuroscience and the Soul' Thursday

The Theology Department and the Science and Theology Network (STN) will host a discussion on "Neuroscience and the Soul" on Thursday, Nov. 3. The dialogue,“Neuroscience and the Soul: Examining How Recent Discoveries About the Brain Affect and Do Not Affect More Traditional Ways of Looking at the Soul,” will be held from 7 to 8:45 p.m. in the O’Shaughnessy Educational Center auditorium.

Theologian Dr. Pavel (Paul) Gavrilyuk, UST Theology Department, will give a brief historical overview of how the soul has been understood over the centuries. Dr. Adam Johnson, Bethel University neuroscientist, will speak about recent developments from a scientific point of view and show images of brain scans. Dr. Thomas Sullivan, UST Philosophy Department emeritus professor, will respond and show how human conceptual ability implies something immaterial about us.

The event is free and open to the public. A Q-and-A session will follow the discussion. Refreshments will be served at a reception following the event.
