Last November, the English Department notified the St. Thomas community (see Bulletin Today, Nov. 2, 2010) that it was moving to a new core Literature and Writing curriculum in fall 2011 and discontinuing its current ENGL 111, 112 and 190 core courses.
This new core curriculum includes a “first course” (ENGL 121) and a cohort of courses (ENGL 201 through 204) from which students may choose their second course in the Literature and Writing core.
What follows is specific information for academic advisers as they help advisees understand their registration options if they have not completed their core requirement in literature and writing.
Registration information (options for summer and fall 2011)
Students who have not completed any coursework toward the core Literature and Writing requirement should register for ENGL 121 Critical Thinking: Literature and Writing this fall semester.
Students who have completed just ENGL 111 Critical Reading/Writing I: Fiction and Nonfiction have two options for completing the second core Literature and Writing requirement:
- Register for one of the two evening sections of ENGL 112 Critical Reading/Writing II: Drama and Poetry scheduled for the extended 2011 summer session (May 25-July 21); or,
- Register for one of the ENGL 201-204 Texts in Conversation courses scheduled next fall or later.
Students who have completed just ENGL 190 Critical Reading/Writing: Major Genres and do not have any other applicable ENGL coursework should take an additional literature course in English numbered 205 or above in any future semester. See Page 22 of the 2010-2012 Undergraduate Catalog for the list of literature courses that fulfill the second core Literature and Writing requirement for ENGL 190 students.
Currently enrolled students who have received credit for the Advanced Placement Literature and Composition exam (ENGL 104P) or another class equivalent to the first core course (usually designated by ENGL 100 or ENGL 104 transfer course equivalencies) and who have not completed any other ENGL coursework should register for one of the ENGL 201-204 Texts in Conversation courses scheduled next fall or later to complete their core Literature and Writing requirement.
Specific topics descriptions for each ENGL 201-204 course offered in fall semester 2011 can be found either on the MURPHY system or by clicking on the course title listed on the English Department “Upcoming Courses” Web page.
Email notice to be sent to students who have not completed their core literature and writing requirement
Students who have not completed their core Literature and Writing requirement will be sent an email from Academic Counseling before early summer and fall registration begins. This email will indicate specifically which ENGL course for which that student should register in a future term.
For more information concerning registration or about the new core Literature and Writing sequence, call the English Department, (651) 962-5600, or email Dr. Andrew Scheiber, department chair.
