Teresa Collett, School of Law, gave a presentation, "Divine Governance, Self Governance and the American Way" as part of the University of Minnesota MacLaurin Lecture Series last week. Her lecture explored questions surrounding Christian involvement in the political process.
Dr. Ellen Kennedy, Service-Learning, received the Higher Education Leader of the Year award at the annual meeting of the National Society for Experiential Education earlier this month in Miami. The award recognizes an NSEE member "who has demonstrated innovative uses of experiential learning in their institution." That includes "leadership in design, development, and implementation of experiential education programs connecting the classroom, curriculum and campus/community-based organizations" as well as leadership and participation in national conferences and publications that contribute to experiential education. She also presented a conference workshop on "The Changing Faces of Minnesota" program, which involves connecting students in several first-year paired courses to students at Abraham Lincoln School in Minneapolis.
Kennedy also had an article in NCIV Network News, a publication of the National Council for International visitors. NCIV sponsors overseas delegations through the U.S. Department of State. Kennedy is a member of the Minnesota International Center, part of NCIV, and she has hosted Minnesota visitors from Cambodia, India, Germany and Nepal. Her article highlights the opportunities to learn about governments, religions and lifestyles around the world and to create friendships that cross social and geographic borders.
Dr. Ray MacKenzie, English Department, is the author of eight articles in the multi-volume New Dictionary of National Biography (Oxford University Press). The articles are on the writers Lady Cynthia Asquith, George Gilfillan, Viola Meynell, James Telfer and William Wilson, and on the publishers Edmund Curll, Sir Allen Lane and Jacob Tonson; also, MacKenzie's article on two novels by François Mauriac appeared in the Encyclopedia of Catholic Literature (Greenwood Press), edited by Dr. Mary Reichardt, Catholic Studies.
Gene McGivern, sports information director, was the author of a feature story on UST baseball coach Dennis Denning that was judged National Story of the Year from among 236 entries in a writing contest sponsored by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Dr. Jeri Rockett, Personal Counseling and Testing, attended the national conference of the Association of University and College Counseling Center Directors Oct. 9-13 in Lake Tahoe, Nev. Rockett serves as continuing education coordinator and liaison to the American Psychological Association for the group. She also serves on the Lifetime Achievement Award Committee. Next year the conference will be held in Minneapolis. Rockett and 10 other Minnesota counseling center directors serve on the planning committee and hope for good weather next October!
Jim Rogers, Center for Irish Studies, attended the Midwest regional meeting of the American Conference for Irish Studies Oct. 14-16. He participated in a panel, "Invisible Irishness," in which he presented a paper, "Seumas O'Kelly's The Weaver's Grave and Joseph Mitchell's 'Mr. Hunter's Grave.' " The paper argued that a 1918 Irish novella influenced a classic work of New Yorker literary journalism.
Sister Mary Catherine Shambour, Modern and Classical Languages Department, and Agnes Fleck of the College of St. Scholastica presented a half-day workshop, "Voices From the East: Russia and China," at the St. Louis County Health and Human Services Conference Oct. 4 in Duluth.
Ashley Shams, Modern and Classical Languages Department, and Dr. Camille George, School of Engineering, presented a poster at the fourth annual International Conference on Service-Learning Research, "Theory to Practice: Advancing Research to Improve Service-Learning Outcomes," Oct. 10-12 at Clemson University in Greenville, S.C. Their poster, "Measuring the Effects of a Short-Term International Service-Learning Project on Intercultural Awareness," looked at measuring intercultural development with qualitative and quantitative techniques.
Dr. Bradley Kemp Wilson, Economics Department, is the author of an article, "The Links Between Inflation, Inflation Uncertainty and Output Growth: New Time Series Evidence From Japan," accepted for publication in the Journal of Macroeconomics.
