Father James Burns, Ph.D., Graduate School of Professional Psychology, was invited as the main speaker for the Quadrennial Chapter of the Third Order Regular Franciscans on Jan. 26. He spoke on “Development of the Whole Person: Human and Spiritual Caring for Self and Others in Community” and “Leadership Resonance: Biblical Metaphors and Types.” In addition he was invited by Bishop Cupich to deliver two key presentations, “The Character of the Pastoral Minister: Personality Styles, Wellness and Morale” and “Acting My Part and Saying My Lines? Creating Connection Through Deep Listening in a Text Message Era,” to the Diocese of Rapid City for its Pastoral Ministry Days March 15 and 16.
Dr. Massimo Faggioli, Theology Department, College of Arts and Sciences, will give a short talk about the meaning of movies in Italian history March 26, at the second annual Italian Film Festival USA of Minneapolis/St. Paul held at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. The festival events are free and open to the public.
Caitlin Houlton, a senior majoring in history and political science, won the "Society for Military History Prize for the Best Undergraduate Student Paper in History” at the 2010 Missouri Valley History Conference in Wheaton, Ill. Her winning paper is titled, “From Farmboys to Fancy Soldiers: The Tale of the 8th Regiment of Minnesota in the Dakota Uprising of 1862.” She will attend the University of Minnesota Law School next year.
Dr. Mary Reichardt, Catholic Studies Department, College of Arts and Sciences, has an article on house history published this month in Ramsey County History magazine. A serendipitous meeting with a former owner, now in his 90s, led Reichardt to research the home's history in the context of its Cathedral Hill neighborhood. The article is a glimpse into old St. Paul and some of its colorful characters and events, including early theater history, connections to writer F. Scott Fitzgerald, a multicultural art collection ahead of its time and a celebrated visit by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. A photo of the home, taken by Reichardt, appears on the magazine’s cover.
Dr. John Wendt, Opus College of Business, served on the American Arbitration Association Special Panel of Arbitrators for American-athlete disputes at the Games of the XXI Olympiad held in Vancouver, British Columbia.
