Kate Burke, reference librarian at the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library Center, is co-author of an article published in the February 2011 issue of College and Research Libraries News. The article, “The accidental mentorship,” discusses how to effectively serve as a mentor to the student employees that one supervises at a college or university. The article can be accessed here.

Dr. Peter Feldmeier, Theology Department, College of Arts and Sciences, published his second book this year, The Path of Wisdom: A Christian Commentary on the Dhammapada, Leo D. Lefebure and Peter Feldmeier; Peeters Publishers and William B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., Belgium/Grand Rapids, Mich./Cambridge, UK, 2011.

Dr. J. Thomas Ippoliti, Chemistry Department, College of Arts and Sciences, gave an invited talk, "Structural Variation and Antibacterial Activity for a Series of Oxazolidinones" on Feb. 9 at Hamline University. The talk described the synthesis and testing of three new antibacterial compounds made by undergraduate students in Ippoliti’s lab.

Dr. Jennifer McGuire, Geology Department, College of Arts and Sciences, is the co-author of an article accepted for publication and chosen as a "featured" article by the American Geophysical Union, a professional organization of geoscientists with more than 35,000 members worldwide. The article, “Inverse Estimation of Parameters for Multi-Domain Flow Models in Soil Columns with Different Macropore Densities," will be published in Water Resources Research. Less than 5 percent of all American Geophysical Union articles earn the "feature" distinction.

Katarina Schuth, O.S.F., St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity, lectured at Durham University in northern England during the week of Jan. 17-21 on “Local Catholicism in Practice: Ministry, Structure, and Management in Changing Times.” She also participated in a seminar at the university, “On Discerning the Living Truth of the Church: Theological and Sociological Reflection on Receptive Ecumenism and the Local Church.” On Jan. 18 she spoke to parishioners at St. Cuthbert’s Church, the Catholic Chaplaincy of Durham University, on “Responding to New Forms of Parish Ministry.”

 On Jan. 13 she led a retreat day for catechetical and religious education leaders of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, titled, “The Spirituality of Collaboration and Communion.” It was held at the Church of St. Gerard in Brooklyn Park.

Dr. Jessica Toft, School of Social Work, recently had an article published in the Social Service Review (December, 2010 edition), titled “The Political Act of Public Talk: How Legislators Justified Welfare Reform.”

Dr. Lisa Waldner, Sociology and Criminal Justice Department, College of Arts and Sciences, is the co-author of the book (with Betty Dobratz, Iowa State University and Tim Buzzell, Baker University), Power Politics, and Society: An Introduction to Political Sociology (Allyn and Bacon).
